ANM 9 / 14 / 6

Good Afternoon Mahesh,

Thank you for your kind response. I think we are faced with a unique problem with these very long breakwaters. My main concern is more the smaller shipping that crosses between Doha and Iran and the other northern Gulf states.

What we have planned for now is basically what was described in my original email. One good strength navigation light about halfway along the Main Breakwater, sectored to a northerly sweep along the direction of the breakwater, from 260 through to 130 approximately. Likewise we would have one in the middle of the south breakwater doing a southerly sweep through from 060 to 240. Both lights would be white.

Obviously the extremeties of the breakwaters will be lit and for these we are planning on using rotating beacons.

Anyhow, we would accept any guidance if we are considered to be going in the wrong direction.

Kind regards,

Peter Blackett

Dear Roger,

We have received the enquiry below and are clearly not qualified to provide the lights technical advice requested.

Please can you advise me who consider would be the best person or agency for the Harbour Master at Ras Laffan Port to contact?

Hal,

Can you help please? I have received the email below from the Harbour Master at Ras Laffan port in Qatar. I would not dare to try and advise anyone on this subject, but wondered if you had had any similar requests in the past, and who you would direct them to for the advice they require.

Thanks, Nigel

Subject: Advice

Good Afternoon Nigel,

Sorry to bother you on this one but I am looking for a bit of advice and maybe you can help out or put me in contact with the right person.

As you know, we will have two breakwaters, each 10 km in length.
Although the backscatter of lights in the background will be extremely bright the breakwaters will be very difficult to see, particularly from a small vessel. I am thinking of putting a light in position 3 and position 7 (as marked on the attached diagram). There will be street lighting along the breakwater and possibly every 100 metres or so we will get a light to face "out to sea" to illuminate the breakwater.

The lights in positions 3 and 7 would be sector lights, obviously just focussing out to sea. Do you have any experience with such long breakwaters anywhere else in the world? And what colour lights should be used? Any advice would be appreciated.

Again, sorry to put this on you. I know you said you had moved away from this lot.

Regards,

Peter
